tommy Eternal Order Devil’s Island 15678 Posts | 0 I found this in an old book that I have that quotes from 1950 Annals of the American Academy of Political Social Sciences; 'Michael MacDougall.. is among the most skilful practitioners of all cheating methods with cards. He can, for example, take an honestly shuffled and cut pack of cards and deal a hand of bridge in which all the high cards fall to himself and his partner. He does this by 'flashing' each card before it is dealt, and giving it to an opponent if it is a low card or saving it, –by slick dealing- for himself or his partner if it is a high card. He 'flashes' the card by holding it slightly apart -not more than a thirty-second of an inch- from the rest of the pack and catching a glimpse of its corner. ..' My questions are; Is it true that he could do this and by the method described and does he or anyone explain the method in any book or DVD etc? I have found two books for sale from Mr MacDougall “Danger in the Cards” and “Card Mastery” that I do not have but was thinking of buying because of what I have read above. If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it. Tommy |

tommy Eternal Order Devil’s Island 15678 Posts | 0 Thanks, but can you say the method I asked about is in Card Mastery. from what I have read about Card Mastery it is a full text of The Erdnase book Expert at the Card Table, which I have. So does it have much more than that? If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it. Tommy |
JasonEngland V.I.P. Las Vegas, NV 1642 Posts | 0 Tommy, Methods certainly exist for peeking the top card and then holding back the top card until you get to a partner's hand or your own. However, MacDougal has a reputation as someone who might've faked such a performance versus actually doing what he said he was doing. (I see nothing wrong with this in a pseudo-demonstration personally.) Jason Eternal damnation awaits anyone who questions God's unconditional love. --Bill Hicks |
tommy Eternal Order Devil’s Island 15678 Posts | 0 I see nothing wrong with this sort of demonstration but I wanted to learn the method if it was true. The book I have implies it was in fact true not faked. The book I have is not what I would call a serious book; 'How to Cheat at Cards' by Livingston and gives little detail of the move. If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it. Tommy |

If so, I find the excerpt you cited above (p 19) to be a bit unbelievable, albeit certainly possible. Like I already said, it's possible MacDougal heel-peeked every card and dealt seconds. But my guess is he faked it (via marked cards, dealing the punch, stacking, or a false shuffle). Jason Eternal damnation awaits anyone who questions God's unconditional love. --Bill Hicks |
tommy Eternal Order Devil’s Island 15678 Posts | 0 It is the same book but mine was published in England and is called How to cheat at cards, maybe different in the USA. I agree with everything you say but I thought it worth asking about. I have tried the heel-peek and deal -never mind second deal- and found it impossible to do it unseen. So I think I will pass on this one. While we are on this book, on another point, there in a Figure of a ring on page 47, fig 19. I have an idea that that ring has potential as a gauge for cutting exact if worn on the little finger. What do you think? If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it. Tommy |
Bill Palmer Eternal Order Only Jonathan Townsend has more than 24172 Posts | 0 Card Mastery was in two parts. One was some material by MacDougall, the other half was the full text of Erdnase. The MacDougall material was not really first class. Phantoms of the Card Table has more of the real work in it. T. Joseph O'Malley Inner circle Canada 1940 Posts | 0 The book is really cheap to purchase, and many magic shops carry it. I learned the heel peek from it. As Bill states it's not first rate stuff. I'm not saying it'd be impossible to heel peek every card as you deal, but, well.. ok I am saying it's impossible to do with good rhythm and timing. I'd love to hear that I was wrong. Like Scarne and many others, I think Mickey was prone to exageration in order to advertise himself.. I did find it odd that 'Expert' was included in the text of this book. From what I recall, it was passed off as Expert being the 'old' way of cheating and MacDougall's stuff being the 'new' way of cheating. I found that to be amusing since in my opinion, the Expert stuff is a lot better than the MacDougall techniques..i wouldn't have had the cojones to do so.. |

T. Joseph O'Malley Inner circle Canada 1940 Posts | 0 I have to check that out. I'd love to watch it. I personally find it fun to see people do things that I have stated are 'impossible'. I guess that could be called..magical. T. Joseph O'Malley |
Bill Palmer Eternal Order Only Jonathan Townsend has more than 24172 Posts | 0 It is very interesting how often people perform the impossible, because they don't know that it is impossible. I have a friend who plays the piano who learned the chromatic scale in thirds off the Ferrante and Teicher arrangement of Autumn Leaves before he found out that it was impossible. It was easy for F&T because it was a duet. Lenny Breaux, the Canadian guitarist, learned some of Les Paul's multi-tracked guitar solos off the albums without realizing that they were impossible. magicman123 New user 86 Posts | 0 I'm going to buy expert at the card table, but what is the difference beetween the original (i know not the actual original), and the tretise version? (this version is paperback and has a green cover) I noticed the number of pages is different, but is it the same content? Thanks
Michael G Regular user 102 Posts | 0 Howdy, Erdnase has been released in a range of editions but they generally contain the same text though sometimes with commentary and additional thoughts. I wouldn't advise you buying the green paperback (Dover) version. The page numbering has been changed and it's quite a poor quality binding. Try and get a copy of the Gambler's Book Club reprint. Jason England has done some great research on the editions. The link is below: http://www.erdnase.com/editions/index.html Michael
papermechanic Regular user 121 Posts | 0 If I were you I would pick up the annotated erdnase by darwin ortiz. provides a lot of additional material.
silverking Inner circle 4586 Posts | 0 Go to eBay, look up 'Erdnase' and pick up one of the white cover versions with the King on it (Powner Edition) which is close enough to the original to use page references etc. Probably cost you $20.00 or so. Do it quick though, there's probably not a whole lot of these left. Failing that, get the Gamblers Book Club version which has some useless notes added by Hoffman at the end but is otherwise OK. Don't get the Dover version, the pages are all screwed up, and when you're talking to other Erdnase guys your pages won't match up and you'll wind up looking confused.
DStachowiak Inner circle Baltimore, MD 2158 Posts | 0 'Card Mastery' by Michael MacDougall includes the complets text of Erdnase, with the correct pagination. MacDougall evidently felt his own book was too slim to at 81 pages so he padded it out by binding in the complete Erdnase book since it was in the public domain. My copy was published by Tannen's but I think Robbins puts it out now. MacDougalls own part of the book is interesting, some of the techniques he includes are a bit bizarre but others are ok. Woke up. Fell out of bed. Dragged a comb across m' head.
The Dowser Special user Canada 760 Posts | 0 There is a recent version out that is made like a small pocket bible with what looks like a leather cover (not sure if it is or not) and ribbon book mark. For 15$ you can't go wrong: http://www.mymagic.com/gaming.htm Dowser
Ben Train Inner circle Erdnase never had 4637 Posts | 0 Here's my two cents. First, get a DOVER. For someone starting, it offeres the most blank space per page of any edition, which provides ample room for notes and personal annotations, questions, etc. It's also cheap enough that you shouldn't mind highliting key concepts, and important phrasings. I actually took it one step further, and got mine rebound (Spiral) so that it will lie flat. Second, the McDougall edition is ****. His 'additions' are virtually worthless, and the book format (Which I don't recall if it is the same format as the original) is irratating. Darwin's book is great, but not for someone just sturting with this text. His annotations, constantly refering you to other sources, can be distracting- especially if you really want to focus on the Erdnase material itself. Once you've gone through the Dover a few times, check it out. It's fantastic. Vernon's revelations, same as Darwin's (my feelings, not content). Do they all contain the same information? A few earlier editions have several card tricks that were excluded. This editions though are rarer then a dover or powner, and you probably wouldn't be getting one of these anyway. Other then that, all editions have the same Erdnase text. All the best, Ben If you're reading this you're my favorite magician.
silverking Inner circle 4586 Posts | 0 Ben, you contrarian One thing, the little pocket bible from Conjuring Arts with the faux leather cover is great (I ordered the 3-pack), but it's NOT the book for research. The type is miniscule to the point of invisibility. It's more for carrying in your pocket when you're flying and just have to read an insightful Erdnase thought...and it's just plain cool. Also, remember that Vernon's 'Revelations' is being re-released soon, which will contain all the original text and diagrams PLUS additional material never seen before......it's gonna' be good.
Ben Train Inner circle Erdnase never had 4637 Posts | 0 One of my friends actually uses the bible edition LIKE a bible- he opens it up to random (and sometimes not random) and reads a short exerpt. Usually, it's actually a great piece of advice! I also got a three pack, and use a copy as a prop when I perform walk-around. If you're reading this you're my favorite magician.
silverking Inner circle 4586 Posts | 0 Actually H&R Magic Books has an amazing deal on right now...they have a REAL Powner Edition, AND a Conjuring Arts 'bible' mini edition together for only $20.00. If I didn't have them already, I'd have to buy them. At times I feel like Mel Gibson in 'Conspiracy Theory' when he has to buy 'Catcher in the Rye' every time he sees it...only for me it's 'Expert'.

splice Inner circle Canada 1245 Posts | 0 I'm a bit concerned about that Obscure Press edition. The press has an empty homepage, and all I could find about them was that they are dedicated to reprinting hard to find, expensive classics, using the same type and layout as the originals. I think we can all agree that EATCT is neither of those, unless you are looking for an original or collectible edition. But the cherry on top is the stated length -- 144 pages is much too short for a traditionally formatted edition, isn't it?
jasons_mind Loyal user 258 Posts | 0 You are right about the page count - I should have looked at that myself - the 1st Edition had 205 pages I believe. I'll post a review of the edition once I recieve the book. If anyone knows anything about the 'Obscure' edition, just drop a line. Jason.
